CHOBE RIVER & OKAVANGO DELTA

6 nights of wonderful wildlife in two of Botswana’s best known wildlife areas.

Chobe National Park is vast and is home to a huge variety of wildlife, including all the major predators. However, it is the Chobe River region in the north-east of the park which is really special, with boat cruises offering incredible viewing of elephant herds as they come to drink, as well as hippo, crocs, buffalo and birdlife. The Okavango Delta needs no introduction and is one of Africa’s most amazing natural destinations, offering exclusivity, big game, walking and water-based safaris. The two properties featured offer different experiences, with one being a boutique lodge and the other a very intimate and wild tented camp, but both offer great game viewing, comfortable accommodation, super hospitality, a friendly environment and good value within Botswana.

ITINERARY DETAILS

Day 1-3: Muchenje Safari Lodge – 3 nights
From Kasane it is a 90 minute drive through the northern reaches of Chobe National Park to Muchenje Safari Lodge, where you will usually arrive in time to settle in and enjoy an afternoon game drive along the shores of the Chobe River. Your time at Muchenje will be spent seeking out the big game of Chobe National Park, principally on game drives, but also by boat on the Chobe River which is a beautiful experience and especially good for elephant viewing during the dry season (late May to early November). Guided walks and night drives are also possible and allow the opportunity to learn about the bush and seek out nocturnal species. Muchenje is an established lodge offering a very comfortable stay and wonderful views from its ridgetop position. The lodge has a friendly, relaxed atmosphere and its location on the western edge of Chobe makes it a much more exclusive option than the various hotels and lodges in the Kasane area.

Day 4-6: Shinde Footsteps – 3 nights
This morning you will game drive back through the park to Kasane Airport, in order to connect with a shared light aircraft transfer south-west over the vast Chobe National Park to the north-eastern section of the incredible Okavango Delta. As you fly over the delta you will marvel at the scenery – a myriad of permanent waterways and lagoons, reed beds, flood plains, dry grassland and woodland. Landing at the Shinde bush airstrip you will transfer through the bush to Shinde Footsteps, arriving in time for lunch overlooking the lagoon in front of camp. Your time exploring the Okavango Delta will include game drives by day and night, walking safaris (optional) and water-based activities. Shinde Footsteps is an intimate and exclusive camp located in the private Shinde concession which is excellent for game sightings.

Day 7: End of Arrangements
After your final morning activity, you will connect with a shared light aircraft flight to Maun.

VARIATIONS AND EXTENSIONS
It is easy to add further safari camps to this itinerary, either within the Okavango Delta or the Linyanti or Kalahari regions. It is also very easy to include a visit to Victoria Falls before the safari. All our itineraries are tailor-made so please do not hesitate to ask us about any possible variations or extensions.

WHEN TO TRAVEL
This itinerary is available year-round, though game viewing is likely to be best from May to November. December to March receives the most rain and whilst at this time of year the scenery is beautiful, the birding is best and the prices are lowest, the game viewing is less predictable, especially for the big herds of elephant along the Chobe River, for which Chobe is best known. More information can be found on our Botswana When To Travel page. Please speak to us regarding your specific requirements and we can recommend the best months to travel.

FLIGHTS AND ACCESS
This itinerary starts in Kasane and ends in Maun. Both towns can be accessed on daily scheduled flights from Johannesburg, South Africa, whilst Kasane is also easy to reach by road from Victoria Falls and Livingstone. International flights are not included in the price guide.
