Walking Safaris in Tanzania
Tanzania is not especially known for walking, However there are a few excellent walking options to consider.
In the north of the country daily walking safaris are possible in regions like Tarangire and the Serengeti whilst a multi-day walking safari is possible in a couple of remote areas of the Serengeti. Serian Serengeti North and South can specialise in walking and offer full on walking trails for visitors wanting to explore the eco-system in depth.
The Ngorongoro Highlands also present some wonderful scenic walking, from day hikes (Ol Moti volcano, Empakai Crater and the more challenging Ol Donyo Lengai volcano) from lodges such as The Highlands, to multi-day walking trails from the Ngorongoro Crater down to Lake Eyasi or to Lake Natron.
In the west of the country the Mahale Mountains and Gombe Stream offer the best chimpanzee tracking in Africa, we highly recommend Greystoke Mahale in Mahale, whilst walking and fly-camping is also possible in Katavi National Park from Chada Camp.
In the south of the country, Kichaka Expeditions operate in Ruaha National Park and offer dedicated walking options, either from their base camp or from mobile fly camps. Led by experienced professional guide Andrew Molinaro, Kichaka are arguably Tanzania’s most ‘serious’ walking outfit operating in true big game wilderness. Within the Selous Game Reserve, daily walking is available from a number of good camps, including Sand Rivers Selous, who offer an excellent overnight fly-camping experience in combination with a walking adventure.
Away from specific wildlife walking, Tanzania offers the chance to conquer the heights of both Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro (at 5895m Uhuru Peak on Kilimanjaro is the highest point in Africa). For more detail please see our Trekking including Kilimanjaro page.
