Why Visit the Garden Route?
Stretching along South Africa’s southern coastline from Mossel Bay to Storms River, the Garden Route is one of the country’s most scenic and diverse regions. With its blend of rugged coastline, mountain ranges, indigenous forest, and picturesque lagoons, the route offers travellers a coastal experience that contrasts beautifully with a safari.
I have just returned from a trip along the Garden Route and it served as a vivid reminder of how much South Africa has to offer beyond safari. The scenery was almost overwhelming – from jagged peaks and golden beaches to lush forests and wild ocean views.
Whether you’re planning a self-drive itinerary or a booking a guided trip, the Garden Route combines natural beauty, comfortable accommodation, and a slower pace that appeals to couples, families, and solo travellers alike.

1. Explore the Beaches of Plettenberg Bay
Plettenberg Bay – or “Plett” as it’s affectionately known – is a wonderful stop on the Garden Route and offers some of the region’s best beach access.
Some of my favourite spots include:
- Lookout Beach, which is spacious and open – perfect for long walks and beachcombing.
- Central Beach, which is more sheltered and family-friendly, with gentle surf and easy access.
- Robberg Beach, a long Blue Flag beach leading to the Robberg Nature Reserve – excellent for coastal hikes and seal watching.
During my visit, I stayed at Walkers Beach, a boutique property right on Central Beach. It was just a few steps from the sand – ideal for early morning walks. In the evenings, we’d sit on the balcony, watch dolphins, and let the day unwind with the changing colours of the sky.
The beaches here are stunning, but not tropical – and that’s part of their charm. This isn’t Mauritius or the Seychelles. The water is cold, and the surf can be powerful – but that’s what makes it so atmospheric.

2. Hike the Robberg Nature Reserve
Just outside Plettenberg Bay, the Robberg Peninsula offers some of the best coastal hiking in South Africa. The trails range from short walks to a 9km loop, with spectacular views of cliffs, ocean, and wildlife. You’ll often spot seals, seabirds, and (in season) dolphins and whales. It’s one of the best places to really appreciate the Garden Route’s raw natural beauty.
3. Experience Lagoon Life in Knysna
Half an hour west of Plett, Knysna provides a completely different atmosphere. Instead of open ocean, the town is built around a vast estuary (often referred to as a lagoon) which makes it perfect for water activities and relaxed sightseeing.
Top things to do include:
- Sunset boat cruises on the lagoon
- Kayaking and paddleboarding
- Visiting the dramatic Knysna Heads, where the ocean meets the estuary
- Wandering through boutiques and cafés on Thesen Island
Thesen Island feels like a little retreat. You’re still close to everything, but it’s calm, easy-going and beautifully laid out.

4. Enjoy Forest Walks and Birdwatching
The Garden Route National Park stretches across much of the area, offering forest walks, canopy tours, and birdwatching. The indigenous forest is home to yellowwood trees, ferns, and over 300 bird species – including the striking Knysna turaco.
There are well-marked trails suitable for all levels, which makes it ideal for stretching your legs between towns or simply slowing down for a day off the road.
5. Relax at a Country Lodge
If you’re looking for peace and space, consider staying just outside the main towns. The Garden Route has some lovely country lodges and guest farms set amidst forest or farmland, yet still within easy reach of Plettenberg or Knysna.
These places really allow you to reset. They’re perfect for second-time visitors or couples looking to unwind without being too remote.

6. Plan a Scenic Self-Drive
The Garden Route is perfectly suited to a self-drive itinerary. The roads are well-maintained, distances are short and there’s plenty to explore along the way – from wildlife sanctuaries to small wineries, mountain passes, and local craft shops.
It links beautifully with Cape Town, the Winelands, and safari destinations, especially on the Eastern Cape. You get a great contrast in one trip – and that’s something visitors really appreciate.

Travel at the Right Time of Year
The Garden Route has a mild, temperate climate year-round, though summer (November to March) is the driest and most popular period. Over Christmas and Easter, accommodation gets snapped up quickly, so early booking is key.
Wildlife sightings – especially marine life like whales and dolphins – are seasonal and activities vary slightly depending on rainfall, but this is a region that rewards visits at any time of year.
Why Add the Garden Route to Your South Africa Trip?
The Garden Route is a gentler, more layered experience than a traditional safari, but it’s no less rewarding. With its blend of coast, forest, food, and friendly towns, it’s an excellent way to slow down, reconnect, and enjoy South Africa’s diverse scenery.
It’s somewhere I’d recommend to almost any traveller. Give yourself a few days, drive at your own pace, and just let the Garden Route unfold.
