Tok Tokkie Trails is a two night/three day walking adventure through the beautiful desert surroundings of the NamibRand Nature Reserve, bordering the Namib Naukluft National Park. Whilst the trail is not considered strenuous, the walking conditions can be slightly challenging when walking on sand, or in high temperatures, and there is one ‘climb’ up to a stunning mountain pass. The walking pace is relaxed with frequent stops to look at wildlife or learn about the desert environment. A big feature of the trail is the overnight camps, where you sleep out in the sand dunes under the stars. The trail has a communal, expedition feel and gives you a superb and very exclusive desert walking and camping experience.

Habitat & Wildlife
The NamibRand Nature Reserve is an exclusive desert reserve bordering the eastern edge of the Namib Naukluft National Park, a little way south of Sesriem and Sossusvlei. The reserve has beautiful scenery, ranging from a wide vegetated sand dune belt to rocky mountains that tower over the surrounding gravel plains. The reserve is home to a variety of wildlife including Hartmann’s mountain zebra, giraffe, oryx, springbok, leopard, bat-eared fox, brown hyena, klipspringer, aardwolf, Cape fox, African wild cat and caracal.
Activities
Each trail is hosted by an experienced guide who will show you the fauna and flora of this living desert. Walking times will vary according to the group and what unfolds in the desert each day but you can expect to cover up to 10 kms on the full day walking (upto 6 hours), and about 3 to 4 kms (2-3 hours) on the arrival and departure days. The trail is not difficult, but a reasonable level of fitness is required. This is a fully supported trail – you’ll need only to carry a day pack.
Seasons
The trail operates year round, but it is worth considering that day time temperatures can be hot between October and March, whilst nighttime temperatures can drop very low between May and September.
The minimum age for children is eight years. We would however suggest that the trail is most suitable for active children 12 years and older.
Tok Tokkie is a funding partner of the Namib Desert Environmental Education Trust (NaDEET), a non-profit, donor sponsored trust, which aims to develop environmentally responsible citizens of Namibia.
Each Tok Tokkie trail begins with a visit to the NaDEET centre which runs a residential programme for Nambians to come and learn about sustainable living and the desert environment.
NaDEET believes that environmental education is a cornerstone for changing course to envision and live for a more sustainable future. The protection of natural areas from large landscapes to urban green spaces are vital to teaching and learning through the environment. NaDEET has provided this opportunity to people of all ages, opening the doors to for thousands of Namibians to enjoy being in the splendour of nature, engaging with environmental problems and solutions, and truly understanding its value.
