Rhino encounters on safari, whether as part of a game drive, tracking on foot, on bike or on horseback, offer incredibly rewarding and memorable wildlife experiences and, at the same time, visiting national parks and reserves contributes to vital conservation and protection of rhino in Africa. Visit the blogs section of our website where we explain the best way to incorporate rhino sightings into a safari in southern and East Africa.

Today is International Primate Day, an annual cele Today is International Primate Day, an annual celebration established to highlight primates around the world and the conservation efforts being made to protect threatened populations. Some of the most prominent names in wildlife conservation worked with primates in Africa, such as Dian Fossey and Dame Jane Goodall. There is, unsurprisingly, something relatable to any primate viewing while on safari – the amusing cheekiness of vervet monkeys and fascinating social interactions of a troop of baboons. Trekking in search of the larger primates offers something altogether different and unique. Coming eye to eye with a mountain gorilla or chimpanzee in their natural habitat is an undeniably moving experience. Trekking for these larger primates usually involves some physical hard work, and a relatively short viewing time (one hour), but your hour with them is one of the most rewarding wildlife encounters possible.

Kenya's Masai Mara is one of Africa's most incredi Kenya's Masai Mara is one of Africa's most incredible wildlife areas and somewhere that we at Safari Consultants have long-established ties with. We have followed the development of the region for many years, including the inception and progress of the hugely successful conservancies. Whether a safari first-timer, or a regular old hand, the Mara is a highly sought after safari destination and while the conservancies provide a model for sustainable wildlife conservation, the numbers of people visiting the National Reserve has become increasingly concerning. However, following the release of the Masai Mara National Reserve Management Plan earlier this year, strong momentum is gathering for meaningful change. A special report in the latest edition of @travelafricamagazine looks into why the Masai Mara holds such appeal, the impact that tourism is having and how the new Management Plan could result in positive change. The report includes input from operators, lodge owners, guides and the magazine’s regular safari-goer readers and makes for well-informed, insightful reading.

August 12th is World Elephant Day, bringing attent August 12th is World Elephant Day, bringing attention to the plight of this well loved and revered animal. Elephant sightings can offer some of the most rewarding, fascinating and humbling wildlife moments on an African safari, whether taking in the majestic power of a large lone bull, marvelling at the social interactions of a breeding herd, or being thoroughly entertained by the antics of a baby elephant.

There are three species of elephant: African savanna (the largest populations being in Southern and Eastern Africa), African forest (found largely in the dense rainforests of West and Central Africa) and Asian (found in the forests of parts of India and Southeast Asia). The easiest way to tell the difference between African and Asian elephants is by the size of their ears: African elephants have much larger ears that are often described as being in the shape of the continent of Africa. As well as having smaller ears, Asian elephants only have one ‘finger’ at the tip of their trunk, whereas their African cousins have two fingers.

Elephants are remarkable at being able to survive in very different ecosystems from wetlands to desert, and from thick forest to open savanna. Yet despite their ability to adapt, habitat loss, climate change, poaching and human-wildlife conflict remain a critical threat to their future. Thankfully there are many initiatives taking place globally to protect and conserve elephants and their habitat. Join us in showing appreciation for these venerable pachyderms.

Our client Gillian Evans has just returned from South Africa’s Kwa-Zulu Natal where she took these impressive photos, making use of specialist photography hides @Zimanga Private Game Reserve There are nine hides on the reserve, all superbly equipped and designed with great attention to detail and the photographer in mind.
