Africa is a vast continent with incredible physical diversity, from snow-capped mountains and endless deserts to steamy jungles, open savanna plains and palm-fringed islands. The natural fauna of Africa is equally diverse, dictated by the varying habitats, and no two safari regions are ever the same.

Protecting the “Lost Chimpanzees of Kyambura Gorge

Protecting the “Lost Chimpanzees of Kyambura Gorge” 🐒🌿

This #WorldWildlifeDay, we’re shining a light on one of the projects close to our hearts at Safari Consultants.

Through the Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust, a new Chimpanzee Monitoring Project is launching this month in Uganda’s Kyambura Gorge, located in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Often referred to as the “Lost Chimpanzees,” this isolated community of around 30 individuals faces extinction without urgent conservation measures to protect and expand their habitat. The three-year initiative, in partnership with the Uganda Wildlife Authority, will establish the first permanent, science-based monitoring programme for the group - a vital step in securing their future.

The project forms part of the wider Kyambura Gorge Eco-Tourism Project, where carefully managed tourism helps protect critical habitats while supporting and engaging local communities. It’s a powerful example of how conservation and travel can, and should, work hand in hand.

If you’re considering a great ape safari in Uganda or Rwanda, it’s worth knowing your journey can directly contribute to the protection of some of the world’s most endangered wildlife and fragile ecosystems.

A golden hour encounter with African Wild Dogs - captured on Joe's recent visit to @leopardhills in the Sabi Sands...🐾

African wild dogs, also known as painted wolves, are one of Africa’s most endangered predators, with only around 6,000 left in the wild. They’re incredibly efficient hunters, working seamlessly as a team with success rates of up to 80%.

What makes them even more fascinating is their social structure. They live in tight-knit packs, care for injured members and when it comes to feeding, they always allow the pups and the more vulnerable members of the pack eat first at a kill. Each dog has a completely unique coat pattern, no two are ever the same.

Seeing them in the wild is always something special!

The spotted hyena: easily recognised by its rounde

The spotted hyena: easily recognised by its rounded ears, spotted coat and powerful build.

Despite having a reputation as scavengers, spotted hyenas are in fact incredibly skilled hunters and live in complex social groups called clans, led by dominant females.

This super photo was taken by client Jenny Varley during her recent trip to Naboisho Conservancy in Kenya, a perfect location to see these fascinating and intelligent predators in action.
