Accommodation Options In South Africa

South Africa offers almost anything you require in accommodation terms. It is a hugely developed and sophisticated country, and urban centres such as Cape Town offer cutting edge contemporary design as well as more traditional accommodation options. As well as mainstream hotels, boutique guesthouses and country lodges, there is an excellent network of more affordable bed and breakfast guesthouses and the main tourist regions also offer a wide range of self-catering apartments and house rentals.

On safari, South Africa has a selection of well run and excellent value for money National Parks Restcamps, but is particularly known for its wide range of superbly run private luxury lodges, some of which offer extreme comfort with air-conditioning, private plunge pools and private butlers. If the South African safari scene lacks anything, it is more of the adventurous and ‘close to nature’ safari options. The market has dictated that most people choosing South Africa as a safari destination have a preference for comfort over adventure, so there are very few opportunities to enjoy a more modest wilderness experience.

When looking to visit Cape Town, it’s also worth considering where you wish to stay. There are four very distinct areas; the V&A Waterfront, Constantia in the valley stretching down the peninsular, the bay area (Camps Bay/ Bantry Bay / Clifton) and the Gardens (on the edge of the city). Each has their own distinct feel: The iconic V&A Waterfront has many restaurants, night spots and activities on your doorstep. The bay area has beautiful beaches with a cosmopolitan restaurant/café scene overlooking the Atlantic Ocean – popular with locals and tourists alike. The valley provides a wonderful oasis away from the city amongst vineyards and golf courses, whilst the Gardens area has an eclectic, arty vibe with interesting cafes and shops. Each has a range of accommodation, from beautiful intimate boutique hotels and guesthouses to large luxury hotels.

There are far too many hotels, country lodges and guesthouses in South Africa to mention all of them, but please find below a limited selection of some of our favourite safari properties, guest houses, luxury hotels, mountain retreats, historical lodges and country hotels around the country, and the exclusive rail journeys. We have listed them by accommodation style or by region. Simply click on the name to visit the property website.

Accommodation Options In Namibia

Namibia offers a wide variety of accommodation to suit different requirements. As self-drive is a popular way to tour the country, there are reasonably priced guest farms, country/desert hotels and safari lodges strategically located around the country. In designated nature reserves, private conservancies and wildlife parks, more typical safari accommodation styles are found, including intimate tented lodges and exclusive desert lodges. The government body for running Namibia’s National Parks and Reserves, Namibia Wildlife Resorts, also offer a range of accommodation, from basic camp sites and self-catering chalets, to a limited number of luxury safari lodges. There is a general mix of properties offering either accommodation only, or accommodation with a range of local activities.

Whilst most accommodation in Namibia can comfortably be reached by normal saloon car, some remote properties are only accessible by 4×4 vehicle or by air. Invariably, these properties include a fully hosted experience with guided activities included.

Tented safaris are a popular way to experience the country, and they allow you to access the most remote regions where no permanent accommodation exists. The camps tend to be very lightweight and mobile (luxury mobile camps have never proved very practical when travelling huge distances through difficult terrain), and these safaris are available either privately, or part of a small group (see our ‘Group tours’ section).

Whilst historically Namibia has never been known as a ‘five star’ destination, there are a number of properties across the country which do offer very high levels of sophistication and luxury which can include features such as air-conditioning and private plunge pools.

Accommodation Options In Tanzania

Tanzania offers a very wide range of accommodation options. For the very adventurous, there are well-organised but simple ‘fly-camping’ options, usually associated with walking safaris. At the luxury end of the market, there are various properties that offer extreme luxury, and many further that combine a high level of comfort with exclusivity, great service and wonderful locations.

For more mainstream safaris in the northern parks, there are a series of decent hotel-style lodges which offer perfectly adequate accommodation, but not a great deal of exclusivity or imagination. If you are prepared to be a little more adventurous, and can afford the extra cost, then there are a number of fantastic seasonal and mobile tented camps from which to choose.

In the south and west of the country, properties tend to be much smaller, rarely catering for more than 30 guests. There are a number of excellent permanent tented camps and lodges which vary in style and comfort but manage to offer a similarly wild and authentic safari experience.

On the coast, the hotel options are equally varied, with a few very exclusive ‘beach retreats’ in remote, unspoilt settings, and a large number of more mainstream beach-resort hotels, particularly on Zanzibar.

Accommodation options in Zambia

Zambia is without doubt the one safari destination where you can really experience the traditional bush values of yesteryear. It is still quite a ‘purist’ safari destination, offering relatively little in the way of genuine ‘five star luxury’, and most visitors prioritise the overall safari experience ahead of luxury and sophistication. Accordingly, a wide range of accommodation options in Zambia are perfectly comfortable, without being overly ‘fussy’ or luxurious. Even the more sophisticated camps and lodges tend to retain a close link with the nature around them.

Tented camps exist throughout the country, but there are an equal number of more traditional ‘safari lodges’, which vary hugely in terms of style and comfort. There are also a number of private safari houses that are ideal for family groups.

However, Zambia is particularly known for its seasonal bush camps which offer a genuine wilderness adventure. Such camps are most common in the North and South Luangwa valleys. Historically these camps, whilst comfortable, were fairly basic and always associated solely with walking safaris. Nowadays however, whilst certain bush camps retain a very adventurous feel and concentrate solely on walking, in general accommodation has become a little more sophisticated and many bush camps are now able to offer a combination of walking and driving.

In general, Zambia offers very exclusive safari accommodation and most camps and lodges are small and intimate. High quality personal hosting, sometimes by camp owners themselves, helps to create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Near Livingstone and the Victoria Falls, boutique style river lodges compete with more mainstream hotel accommodation options.

Accommodation Options in Botswana

The vast majority of safari camps and lodges within Botswana are tented, varying considerably in style and degrees of luxury. At the luxury end of the market, ‘tents’ are often set into permanent wooden structures with thatch roofs and huge private decks, backed up by five star furnishings, bath tubs with views out over the bush, and in some cases, air-conditioning and private plunge pools. However, there is also a wide range of more modest tented camps and lodges where location, atmosphere and the ‘close to nature’ experience still triumph over comfort and facilities! For the adventurous, there are well-organised but simple ‘fly-camping’ or ‘adventure camping’ options, usually associated with affordable overland camping safaris or specific walking, mekoro or horse-riding trails.

However, not all camp and lodges in Botswana are tented, and there are a limited number of safari hotels or solid-structure lodges throughout the key safari regions, most notably in and around the Chobe National Park.

You might also wish to consider the option of taking a traditional luxury mobile tented safari, either privately or on a scheduled small group departure. Whichever you choose, these safaris always offer a first class tented experience and a genuine bush safari. Although these safaris are unable to visit any of the private concessions, there are many wonderful regions where they are able to operate.

Many of Botswana’s permanent camps are located on private concessions which are usually only accessible by air. They offer a very exclusive safari experience for a very restricted number of guests.

Accommodation options in Kenya

Kenya offers a very wide range of accommodation options. For the adventurous, there are well-organised but simple ‘fly-camping’ options, usually associated with walking or horse-riding safaris. At the luxury end of the market, there are various properties that offer very high levels of comfort, but the ‘wow’ factor in these places tends to come more from style, location and exclusivity, rather than the ‘technical’ luxury and sophistication on offer. Traditional luxury mobile safaris offer exclusivity and a taste of what exploratory safaris used to be like, but travelling in this manner tends now to be an expensive way to see the country, unless you have a reasonable size party.

Kenya is perhaps better known for offering superb hospitality, particularly in the many ‘bush homesteads’ and ‘seasonal tented camps’ scattered around the country, some of which are very intimate and can be booked on an exclusive basis for families or private groups. Exclusive brick/solid build safari lodges are found in limited areas, whilst a wide range of permanent tented lodges are available throughout the country, most notably in the Masai Mara, where can vary greatly in terms of size, style and comfort. Although we tend not to recommend the larger, more commercial properties, Kenya does offer a variety of mainstream safari hotels.

On the coast, the hotel options are equally varied, with a few very exclusive ‘beach retreats’ in remote, unspoilt settings, and a large number of more mainstream beach hotels in the more traditional beach centres. Private beach houses are widely available along the coast and on Lamu.
